Artists of the 20th Century: Salvador Dali (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Used Price: ?6.11
Customer Review: A rather bland look at selected works of the artist
First off, let me say that I know next to nothing about art. I would like to cultivate an appreciation for great artwork, but it certainly does not come naturally - especially when it comes to modern art. Dali, however, is a master I at least have some affinity with. Who doesn’t know of the melting clocks? I have also seen the dream sequence he created for Hitchcock’s film Spellbound in 1945. Plus, the guy was just plain weird, and that is something I know a little bit about myself. This Artists of the 20th Century DVD looks solely at Dali’s artwork. All you see throughout the 50 minutes of video is one piece after another. There is no biographical look at the man, no mention of his contributions to the world beyond his paintings, and certainly no commentary on his eccentric personality (or mustache). There is not even an adequate identification of Gala, his inspiration and muse, despite numerous references to her in his paintings. Thus, this DVD will not introduce you to Dali the man or Dali the artist - it only looks at selected pieces of the art work of the maestro. Dali’s artwork is obviously impressive, and I was surprised by the variety of his work and styles. The narrator offers insight into some paintings - others, you just look and advance. I don’t understand a lot of Dali’s work, nor can I see some of the things the narrator tells me are in his more abstract pieces. The melting clocks and other surrealist images appeal to me. Dark works such as Visage of War speak volumes to the human observer, and the disappearing bust of Voltaire paintings are also striking. I was most impressed by the small sample of classical pieces Dali painted, however - largely because I did not know he ever produced such works. My idea of a painting equates with something like Design for the Interior Decoration of a Stable-Library, which is a strikingly beautiful work. Is this DVD worth watching? I will have to say No. If you’re a know-nothing novice like me, there is not enough basic information provided to really illuminate the artwork you will be shown. If you’re knowledgeable about Dali, you’ll be disappointed by the limited nature of the production and by the exquisite Dali works excluded from the show. After watching this, I decided to peruse some Dali galleries online, and I must say that the Internet makes this DVD of little value. Not only are the analyses and critical comments you will find online far superior to the information provided in this video, the quality of the paintings themselves are far better online than they are on the DVD.

Un Chien Andalou [1928] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Used Price: ?6.16
Customer Review: A waking nightmare
Un Chien Andalou and L’age D’or embrace all the principles of surrealism, and are vivid examples of the power of cinema to express the power, uniqueness and oddness of dreams. If you’re looking for a normal, Hollywood style, plot driven movie, then these films aren’t for you - there is very little, if any, plot to either of the films, and searching for meaning or attempting to empathise with the characters will only cause confusion. Surrealist films are intended to be viewed as explorations of the unconscious, and as sets of images that may or may not have relevance to each other. They were also intended as a reaction against Hollywood and its mass market appeal. The first film, Un Chien Andalou, is only 16 minutes long, and is not for the squeamish. Scenes of eyes being slashed with razor blades, ants crawling from hands, severed limbs, and decaying animal corpses are all shown in close-up, so be prepared. The film is a confusing, viscious assault on the senses, and touches upon ideas of death, rape, sex, sin, violence, etc. L’age D’or is longer at 63 minutes, and unlike Un Chien Andalou, which was a huge commercial success, it was banned almost instantly due to its blasphemous attitude to religion. It shows various tabboo events, including a man shooting his son when he irritates him, and is generally unpleasant, though intriguing. This film was disowned by Dali, who broke off his partnership with Bunuel afterwards, as he felt that Bunuel had destroyed his vision and created a film which he hated. Personally I found both movies difficult and unenjoyable to watch, but they are fascinating as works which provoke questions of desire, repression, the connection between the conscious and the unconscious, the placating power of Hollywood, and the eternal question: What is art? I would only recommend them to people who have an interest in such questions, or who particularly enjoy Surrealist works. A final note: this DVD edition is excellent if you’re interested in the history of surrealism, or the relationship between Bunuel and Dali, and will be a huge help to anyone studying it for university or for personal education. Both films have interesting and comprehensive commentaries by Robert Short (who, despite his comical tone, clearly knows what he’s talking about), and in addition, the first disc also includes a long and interesting introduction by Short which deals with all aspects of Surrealism, from its beginnings in France with Breton, to the ambivalent attitude of the surrealists and of Bunuel himself to the success of the films. It also examines the symbolism within the films. Admittedly, it could have been more engaging, as it merely shows Short’s head and shoulders throughout, and it would have been more watchable had they included some different images. There is also a documentary on Bunuel. Enjoy!
Customer Review: work it out for yourself
It is unecessary to attempt to understand what this film is about, i also think that it isnt completely necessary to use it as entertainment. Films made during the surrealist movement should be regarded as works of art and UN CHIEN ANDALOU is a work of pure unique genius on Bunuels part. Surrealism often represents the dream world and dreams very rarely make any sense or have any sort of linear narrative in real life. What they often do have is semiology. Many of the symbols in this film could be to do with sexual tension, such as the ants crawling out of the hand and the spacial discontinuity represents the dreamworld, ever had a dream when you are in a room which doesnt look anything like the room you are meant to be in but you know somehow that it just is? These ideas are all interpreted in this film. It is my feeling that some of the best art ever made is that which was made during the surrealist movement as it allows you to interpret your own readings. UN CHIEN ANDALOU is a classic example of this.

Customer Review: A comprehensive guide to Dali’s work in film
The success and notoriety of the films Un Chien Andalou (1929) and its follow-up L’?ge d’or (1930) have not only cast an indelible shadow over the treatment of surrealism and cinema as a whole–Robert Short’s recent book The Age of Gold: Surrealist Cinema (2003), for instance, is devoted almost entirely to Un Chien Andalou and L’Age d’Or (there is an additional short chapter on The Seashell and The Clergyman of 1928)–it has also obscured consideration of Dal?’s personal involvement with film beyond those two seminal works, both within and beyond his involvement with the surrealist movement. As an introduction and guide through the complicated history of the various film projects Dal? would continue to undertake throughout his life, Elliott King’s Dal?, Surrealism, and Cinema should prove useful in bringing public attention back to that material and serve more generally to open up a greater awareness of the multifarious nature of Dal?’s artistic activity. This book provides a chronological tour through over 20 film projects of Dal?’s, collected broadly under the headings of his surrealist period, `Hollywood’, and `Later Films’. While this inescapably includes accounts of Un Chien Andalou and L’?ge d’or, King’s focus is primarily on the later projects, which took on a variety of forms. Some, like Surrealist Mysteries of New York and The Explosion of The Swan never got beyond the stage of embryonic scenarios; others would be aborted collaborations with the likes of The Marx Brothers and Alejandro Jodorowsky; and more importantly, the book details Dal?’s pioneering ventures into the realm of video with Chaos and Creation, as well as television with Impressions of Upper Mongolia-Homage to Raymond Roussel. King fills the book with a plenitude of important historical observations as well as a number of entertaining anecdotes that one might expect from Dali. King takes us carefully back through many of the experiments, collaborations, and imaginings that have long been overlooked in respect to Dali’s film work. It is a worthwhile journey and King’s book should prove to be a valuable resource for studies of Dal?’s lifelong involvement with film.

Customer Review: Revealing!!I
Here Dali gives an intresting version of his early life. Egocentric, boastful and just plain odd!! This book exposes the enigma of Dali’s symbolism allowing entry, the door ajar,to his world.
Customer Review: Both an amazingly frank read and a flamboyant self portrait.
This book is impossible to put down. Whilst documenting many of the events surrounding the artist and also his routines through his early thirties, the book is also a whirlwind of comedy, snobbishness, seriousness, self-adoration and fanaticism. Dali was a talented self publicist and some of the references here highlight this. However the book benefits from its authors conviction and passion and when Senor Dali is lacking in modesty it makes reading it commensurately more compelling! It is a hugely riveting read which I challenge anyone not to enjoy. It is also superbly illustrated by Dali throughout.
