Breathing House
Customer Review: An Author’s Opinion
I really enjoyed this recording of some very fine poetry. Marcielle’s pieces really paint a visual picture in your mind. I also like how she has a nice mix of serious and thought provoking to light and funny. Add to all of this her smooth clear voice which is very pleasing to listen to over and over. I especially like #12 “What the ugly boy and the pretty girl have in common” A simple piece with a huge message. I highly recommend this CD.

Customer Review: A waking nightmare
Un Chien Andalou and L’age D’or embrace all the principles of surrealism, and are vivid examples of the power of cinema to express the power, uniqueness and oddness of dreams. If you’re looking for a normal, Hollywood style, plot driven movie, then these films aren’t for you - there is very little, if any, plot to either of the films, and searching for meaning or attempting to empathise with the characters will only cause confusion. Surrealist films are intended to be viewed as explorations of the unconscious, and as sets of images that may or may not have relevance to each other. They were also intended as a reaction against Hollywood and its mass market appeal. The first film, Un Chien Andalou, is only 16 minutes long, and is not for the squeamish. Scenes of eyes being slashed with razor blades, ants crawling from hands, severed limbs, and decaying animal corpses are all shown in close-up, so be prepared. The film is a confusing, viscious assault on the senses, and touches upon ideas of death, rape, sex, sin, violence, etc. L’age D’or is longer at 63 minutes, and unlike Un Chien Andalou, which was a huge commercial success, it was banned almost instantly due to its blasphemous attitude to religion. It shows various tabboo events, including a man shooting his son when he irritates him, and is generally unpleasant, though intriguing. This film was disowned by Dali, who broke off his partnership with Bunuel afterwards, as he felt that Bunuel had destroyed his vision and created a film which he hated. Personally I found both movies difficult and unenjoyable to watch, but they are fascinating as works which provoke questions of desire, repression, the connection between the conscious and the unconscious, the placating power of Hollywood, and the eternal question: What is art? I would only recommend them to people who have an interest in such questions, or who particularly enjoy Surrealist works. A final note: this DVD edition is excellent if you’re interested in the history of surrealism, or the relationship between Bunuel and Dali, and will be a huge help to anyone studying it for university or for personal education. Both films have interesting and comprehensive commentaries by Robert Short (who, despite his comical tone, clearly knows what he’s talking about), and in addition, the first disc also includes a long and interesting introduction by Short which deals with all aspects of Surrealism, from its beginnings in France with Breton, to the ambivalent attitude of the surrealists and of Bunuel himself to the success of the films. It also examines the symbolism within the films. Admittedly, it could have been more engaging, as it merely shows Short’s head and shoulders throughout, and it would have been more watchable had they included some different images. There is also a documentary on Bunuel. Enjoy!
Customer Review: work it out for yourself
It is unecessary to attempt to understand what this film is about, i also think that it isnt completely necessary to use it as entertainment. Films made during the surrealist movement should be regarded as works of art and UN CHIEN ANDALOU is a work of pure unique genius on Bunuels part. Surrealism often represents the dream world and dreams very rarely make any sense or have any sort of linear narrative in real life. What they often do have is semiology. Many of the symbols in this film could be to do with sexual tension, such as the ants crawling out of the hand and the spacial discontinuity represents the dreamworld, ever had a dream when you are in a room which doesnt look anything like the room you are meant to be in but you know somehow that it just is? These ideas are all interpreted in this film. It is my feeling that some of the best art ever made is that which was made during the surrealist movement as it allows you to interpret your own readings. UN CHIEN ANDALOU is a classic example of this.

Dali (Mallard Fine Art Series) Almost half Dal?’s illustrations in this book have rarely been seen

This publication presents the entire painted oeuvre of Salvador Dal? (1904-1989). After many years of research, Robert Descharnes and Gilles N?ret finally located all the paintings of this highly prolific artist. Many of the works had been inaccessible for years - in fact so many that almost half the illustrations in this book have rarely been seen.
Customer Review: Dali revealed
Dali (Mallard Fine Art Series) I have read this book cover to cover and enjoyed every word! Paul Moorhouse manages to give a great amount of information covering Dali’s life, his contribution to Surrealism, hidden aspects of his personality, his thinking and preferences at different periods in his life, thus allowing the reader to enter the magical world of Dali. The paintings selected span Dali’s lifetime and represent the major directions of his work at different points in his life. The explanation provided for each painting includes its symbolism, its relation to what the artist was going through personally at the time, as well as connections with the historical period and other influences. The only minus is the quality of the reproduction of a few of the paintings which is a bit disappointing. All in all a book I highly recommend.
Customer Review: Even better as a whole
The value of this book is in its 1600+ image reproductions. A few of them are photos of Dali or the people and places that inspired him. A very few show existing artworks to which Dali’s creations responded. The overwhelming majority, however, display Dali’s own paintings or the sketches related to them.

And the mass of imagery is overwhelming. The book traces Dali’s output from his early, formative periods onwards. Although Dali was productive in the 1920s, his familiar style emerged in the 1930s and simply expanded for the next half-century. The chronological organization of this book lets us see Dali’s art and personality develop. Among other things, we see how his sketching evolved from pen drawings early in his career to loose oil sketches later. This also seemed to complete some kind of cycle, from the relative crudity of his early work, to the crystalline finish of his best-known years, back to imprecision again, but with all of his mature expressiveness.

By its attempt at completeness, this presents aspects of Dali that other authors often ignore. For example, Dali was profoundly influenced by Catholic Christianity. Although his personal beliefs may be difficult to fathom, he produced some of the most beautiful images of Christ ever created.

Descharne’s commentary supports the images well, but it’s hard to read. I don’t mean that the text is badly written - quite the opposite, it is very helpful, especially in biographical notes that describe Dali’s life at the time of each work. Instead, I mean that my thoughts can’t stay on the words for long when the pictures take such command of my attention.

Persistence of Memories by Salvador Dali

Diary of a Genius A seminal surrealist text, revealing the astonishing and intimate workings of the mind of Salvador Dali, the eccentric polymath genius who became the living embodiment of the 20th century’s most subversive, disturbing and influential art movement. This second volume of Dali’s autobiography covers his life from 1952 to 1963, the time of amour fou for his wife Gala and their bizarre world travels. This is Dali’s “rhinocerontic” period, and he preaches post-holocaustal gospels of nuclear mysticism and cosmogenic atavism leading to his painting of the Assumption and his film script, The Flesh Wheelbarrow. This new, expanded edition includes a brilliant revelatory essay on the importance of Dali’s art to the 20th century by the seminal author J G Ballard. Illustrated throughout.

The only edition to buy. — The London Times

Dali’s paintings reveal in the most powerful form the basic elements of the Surrealist imagination: a series of equations for dealing with the extraordinary transformations of our age. Let us salute this unique genius. — J G Ballard
Customer Review: very quick delivery
I was excited to see I got the book within a few days of ordering. Also, it was in excellent condition.
Customer Review: Review on “Diary of a Genius”
From 1952 to 1963, Salvador Dali kept a journal, a diary of his thoughts, creative reasoning’s, and mindful tangents. In a matter of several hours and 186 pages, I feel as if I have delved far into the mind of a man whose entire life is either nonsense blathering of the brain or philosophical wonders reaching far beyond my own capacities of comprehension. While Diary of a Genius did not keep me in suspense, give me nightmares or have me in tears, the book did touch a part of my brain that doesn’t get triggered very often, let alone four hours straight.
Dali writes daily entries into his diary discussing off-the-wall realizations, urges, drives, and adorations. One of the most interesting aspects of the book was to read the very intimate words of one of the most renowned surrealist painters in the world. Dali talks of his process in working on many pieces in a day-by-day account of his struggles and conquests in painting. He is fueled mainly by his love for his wife Gala, but also by the incisive apprehension and dissection of oddities accumulating in his head. He talks of his bowel movements, his intrigue in Hitler, his subconscious representation of rhinoceros horns, and his love of elephant skulls in the summer.
Diary of a Genius was, in short, an interesting read that kept me entertained for a short period of time. I am much more knowledgeable of Dali himself and will look at his work now with a new understanding of the peculiar man behind the brush. I would definitely recommend this book to any psychology student looking to analyze the intricate workings of a madman’s ways and fantasies of the mind. I would also recommend this book to any fan of Salvador Dali, surrealism, or art in general. I would suggest, and I believe that Dali would agree with me, that this book be read while sitting on the toilet.

Customer Review: Excellent
An excellent overview of a wonderful artist. It certainly helps you look behind the well known pieces and see a tremendous amount of art work spanning many years.
Customer Review: dali was one who knows, but acts as as if he did not know!!!
every time i bring up the salvador dali people say oh but he was a madmen, a lunatic. and i say no dali was very sane and it is you who are mad (in the sense) you can not see straight. your vision is ascew. we would do well to remember that dali knew very cleary of his immortality, his spiritual roots so to speak. in one way he saw himself as a showmen (he loved the absurd) but there was also serious side to dali which shone thru in places such as his wonderful “the unspeakable confessions of salvador dali”. quotes such as ” that is true which we are strong enough to impose” in other words he knew we create reality. thankyou to kenneth grant for noticing this. another quote ” i fear i will die without heaven” some commentators have taken this to be dali’s conversion to catholisism, but what he is saying in his inimitable fashion is that he feared he would die without realising heaven on earth rather than dieing to the physical (dense, hard body) and ascending to one of the millions of heavens. again dali was no fool, you proberly are! ha ha ha

Customer Review: Excellent
An excellent overview of a wonderful artist. It certainly helps you look behind the well known pieces and see a tremendous amount of art work spanning many years.
Customer Review: dali was one who knows, but acts as as if he did not know!!!
every time i bring up the salvador dali people say oh but he was a madmen, a lunatic. and i say no dali was very sane and it is you who are mad (in the sense) you can not see straight. your vision is ascew. we would do well to remember that dali knew very cleary of his immortality, his spiritual roots so to speak. in one way he saw himself as a showmen (he loved the absurd) but there was also serious side to dali which shone thru in places such as his wonderful “the unspeakable confessions of salvador dali”. quotes such as ” that is true which we are strong enough to impose” in other words he knew we create reality. thankyou to kenneth grant for noticing this. another quote ” i fear i will die without heaven” some commentators have taken this to be dali’s conversion to catholisism, but what he is saying in his inimitable fashion is that he feared he would die without realising heaven on earth rather than dieing to the physical (dense, hard body) and ascending to one of the millions of heavens. again dali was no fool, you proberly are! ha ha ha
