Arts and Crafts Idea

Arts and Crafts Idea:  Foam Sheet Glasses Case

Are you a camp director, teacher, or homeschool mom looking for a new arts and crafts idea for your kids?  Or maybe you are a recreation director at a senior center or nursing home and could use a new project.  Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting and fun for all.  This glass case can be used, given as a gift, or converted into a necklace purse.

To make the glasses case, you will need the following simple materials:  a square of craft foam, plastic or large blunt needles, lanyard lace or thick yarn.  Cut two rectangles from the foam, each 3-1/2 inches (9 cm.) by 6 inches (15 cm.).  With a hole punch, make holes on three sides of each rectangle, leaving one short side unpunched.  Make the holes 1/2 inch apart and allow at least 1/4 inch between the hole and the edge of the craft foam.  The holes need to line up so that the two pieces can be laced together.  If you are preparing the craft for small children, you should make the holes yourself.  Otherwise, the crafters can do this step if you have enough pairs of hole punches.

At this point the crafters can cut decorative shapes from other colors of craft foam, or you can buy sets of ready-cut foam shapes.  If you are doing the craft at a special event, like vacation Bible school, choose shapes that echo the theme of the event.  For instance, if the Bible school or camp has a cowboy theme, find shapes that fit well, such as boots, cowboy hats, and stars.  Let the kids choose the shapes they like and glue on as desired.  You might also like to provide beads or sequins to glue on as well, especially if the crafters are a little older.

The next step in this arts and crafts idea is to thread the plastic needle with the yarn or lanyard lace.  Yarn might be a little easier to handle, but lanyard lace is shiny and attractive.  In a pinch, some teachers of small children use a bobby pin as a needle.  It is certainly a safe alternative.  Simply loop the yarn through the opening and use the open end of the bobby pin as if it were the point of the needle.  The children can now begin to lace the front and back of the glasses case together.

To turn this arts and crafts idea into a necklace purse, simply attach a piece of lanyard lace to each corner making a long handle.  Kids will enjoy using this case as a place to store secret notes and small objects.  If they’d rather, they can give the glasses case to a parent, grandparent, or friend who wears glasses.  Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting for all.

Persistance of Memory - Salvador Dali by Wild Ties multicolor silk ties This 100% silk necktie is inspired by Salvador Dali’s surrealistic masterpiece, The Persistence of Memory. The painting portrays four drooping or melting clocks set along the seashore of Catalonia at Cape Creus. The painting is thought to comment on the fluidity of time. An excellent necktie for any fan of the surrealistic or of Salvador Dali.

Customer Review: A waking nightmare
Un Chien Andalou and L’age D’or embrace all the principles of surrealism, and are vivid examples of the power of cinema to express the power, uniqueness and oddness of dreams. If you’re looking for a normal, Hollywood style, plot driven movie, then these films aren’t for you - there is very little, if any, plot to either of the films, and searching for meaning or attempting to empathise with the characters will only cause confusion. Surrealist films are intended to be viewed as explorations of the unconscious, and as sets of images that may or may not have relevance to each other. They were also intended as a reaction against Hollywood and its mass market appeal. The first film, Un Chien Andalou, is only 16 minutes long, and is not for the squeamish. Scenes of eyes being slashed with razor blades, ants crawling from hands, severed limbs, and decaying animal corpses are all shown in close-up, so be prepared. The film is a confusing, viscious assault on the senses, and touches upon ideas of death, rape, sex, sin, violence, etc. L’age D’or is longer at 63 minutes, and unlike Un Chien Andalou, which was a huge commercial success, it was banned almost instantly due to its blasphemous attitude to religion. It shows various tabboo events, including a man shooting his son when he irritates him, and is generally unpleasant, though intriguing. This film was disowned by Dali, who broke off his partnership with Bunuel afterwards, as he felt that Bunuel had destroyed his vision and created a film which he hated. Personally I found both movies difficult and unenjoyable to watch, but they are fascinating as works which provoke questions of desire, repression, the connection between the conscious and the unconscious, the placating power of Hollywood, and the eternal question: What is art? I would only recommend them to people who have an interest in such questions, or who particularly enjoy Surrealist works. A final note: this DVD edition is excellent if you’re interested in the history of surrealism, or the relationship between Bunuel and Dali, and will be a huge help to anyone studying it for university or for personal education. Both films have interesting and comprehensive commentaries by Robert Short (who, despite his comical tone, clearly knows what he’s talking about), and in addition, the first disc also includes a long and interesting introduction by Short which deals with all aspects of Surrealism, from its beginnings in France with Breton, to the ambivalent attitude of the surrealists and of Bunuel himself to the success of the films. It also examines the symbolism within the films. Admittedly, it could have been more engaging, as it merely shows Short’s head and shoulders throughout, and it would have been more watchable had they included some different images. There is also a documentary on Bunuel. Enjoy!
Customer Review: work it out for yourself
It is unecessary to attempt to understand what this film is about, i also think that it isnt completely necessary to use it as entertainment. Films made during the surrealist movement should be regarded as works of art and UN CHIEN ANDALOU is a work of pure unique genius on Bunuels part. Surrealism often represents the dream world and dreams very rarely make any sense or have any sort of linear narrative in real life. What they often do have is semiology. Many of the symbols in this film could be to do with sexual tension, such as the ants crawling out of the hand and the spacial discontinuity represents the dreamworld, ever had a dream when you are in a room which doesnt look anything like the room you are meant to be in but you know somehow that it just is? These ideas are all interpreted in this film. It is my feeling that some of the best art ever made is that which was made during the surrealist movement as it allows you to interpret your own readings. UN CHIEN ANDALOU is a classic example of this.

Who Gets to Call It Art? Who Gets to Call it Art? is a wild ride through the fascinating 1960s New York art world, seen through the eyes of first “contemporary art” curator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Henry Geldzahler. Never-before-seen footage of artists including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein as well as exclusive interviews with artists Frank Stella, David Hockney, and James Rosenquist provide a vibrant and entertaining look at ten amazing years when American artists challenged everything and forever changed the world of art.
Customer Review: Pop art
I’ve purchased this DVD to find out what’s behind pop art who are its main protagonists and indeed who gets to call it art? The feature is made up by a series of interviews with prominent artists from the 50s and 60s who weren’t so well known back then. In fact is a film about Henry Geldzahler who went to the art school with Andy Warhol and became curator at Met during the 60s, Henry introduced artists like Larry Poons, Mark Di Suvero, Andy Warhol, etc to the general public thus enlarging and challenging the established view of what’s art. The movie also answered my question - pop art social effect is simply to reconcile us to a world of commodities…banalities and vulgarities which is to say in effect indistinguishable from advertising art.
Customer Review: The life and legend of Henry Geldzahler and the Pop Art movement
Henry Geldzahler came from a well-to-do family and always wanted to be a curator. After interning at the Whitney at 15 he fell in love with modern art. He got a degree from Yale and after a couple of years of doctoral studies at Harvard he accepted a position at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was hardly known for its support of the latest directions in art.

This movie is about Geldzahler and what he did to support the pop art movement that included artists such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, and many others. The story is told with tapes and films of Geldzahler, as well as period and contemporary interviews with the artists concerned (whether supportive or contrary to the movement).

The culmination of the film is the famous and hugely controversial show Geldzahler put on in 1970 at the Metropolitan. “New York Painting 1940-1970″. It was a blockbuster and still resonates to this day. I loved the comment about how he selected what to put in the show (because no matter how large an exhibition, so much had to be left out). Geldzahler said that he picked those works that he had seen and than left him wanting to see it again. Whatever you think about the “seriousness” or “worth” of the art, much of it is certainly beautiful and all of it is full of cheer, optimism, fun, and some downright silliness. Isn’t that refreshing from being dour all the time?

Henry Geldzahler died far too young at 59 in 1994. We even get to see inside his home and the beautiful objects with which he had surrounded himself. They are stunning.

This is a fine short film to get some background about this interesting and influential patron on modern art and the artists who did all that work. It is quite charmingly done and never gets sidetracked in the side arguments.

Recommended.

Un Chien Andalou Filmed in Paris in 1929, UN CHIEN ANDALOU is regarded as the first film produced purely from within the Surrealist movement and is a landmark in the history of cinema. Loving treatment to DVD includes, as bonus material, an interview/documentary with Juan Luis Bunuel (Luis’ son), commentary by Surrealism expert Stephen Barber, excerpts from Luis Bunuel’s 1953 address “Mystery of Cinema”, and beautiful illustrations by UK artist Dave Mckean. NTSC, region 0.
Customer Review: Sureal Classic.
What would be of experimental cinema without this masterpiece.
Bu?uel and Dali, what to expect from this two minds!
I need to agree that the transfer is not very good on the Kino release, the extras are great, not the commentary but the Bu?uel’s son interview, Juan Luis, which i find very informative to understand what happened to the relation between the two artiist after they work toghether.
Watch it all over and over and…

Imagine (Deluxe Edition) Imagine John Lennon comes from a treasure trove: the legendary musician’s own collection of more than 240 hours of film and videotape, much of it never seen by the public. With cooperation from Yoko Ono in its creation, producers David L. Wolper and Andrew Solt (partners on This Is Elvis) transform the archival footage - and a monumental 36-tune soundtrack - into a spellbinding account of a complex, fascinating man. Lennon’s own voice narrates “a classic film biography” (Roy Leonard, WGN-TV/Chicago).

DVD Features:
Additional Scenes:Never Before Seen Footage of the Island House (Lake House at home of John and Yoko, Tittenhurst Estate in Ascot, England)
Audio Commentary:John Lennon Trivia Track (subtitled, not audio)
DVD ROM Features:John Lennon Music Guide
Featurette:Tribute to John Lennon: The Man, The Music, The Memories (w/ the Filmmakers David L. Wolper, Andrew Solt, Sam Egan, Editors Bert Lovitt and Bud Friedgen)
Interviews:John & Yoko: Truth Be Told (BBC Radio Interview with John and Yoko) William Ernest Pobjoy Interview (Headmaster Quarry Bank High School - John Lennon’s Grammar School)
Other:Acoustic IMAGINE - never before released performance at the Apollo Theatre in New York City, Dec. 17, 1971
Theatrical Trailer:James Dean Trailer

Customer Review: Imagine
This was a very moving documentary.
I was brought to tears while watching these moments in the life of John Lennon.

It’s an excellent product for any fan!
Customer Review: Imagine
The strength of “Imagine” lies in its clear-eyed depiction of its subject. Gifted and well-intentioned as he was, Lennon was no saint, and at times, misguided if not na?ve. Example: John and Yoko taking to bed to protest the Vietnam War makes no more sense now than it did then. Conservative cartoonist Al Capp visits them and calls their action “self-aggrandizing” (don’t miss this sequence). In truth, their motives were noble, but their tactics were too bizarre to resonate. Clearly Lennon was still assimilating an unprecedented super-stardom, and coping with the psychic scars of a mother who abandoned him, by letting Yoko infantilize and control him. As John himself wrote, “Whatever gets you through the night…” This revealing documentary is a must-see for any Beatles fan.

Salvador Dali: A Soft Self-Portrait Customer Review: WISH IT WERE ON DVD!!!
I LOVE THIS FILM
…and if you are a fan of Dali you’ll love it, too.
It is horrendous that this work of art is not available on DVD.

Customer Review: Irrational non-linear, psychedelic, artful and philosophical
This masterful video captures the very essence of the philosophical motivational yearnings of “the master”. Proving he is not crazy, but rather a futurist in thought, mind and expression.

Narrated by Orsen Wells this video is a must see because it so superbly interweaves spacial dimensions of time so as to be “eye candy” for the senses. Shot in black and white and color, using trick photography, illusions, foolery and showmanship. Dali himself put his own stamp on this production and it is a true shame that this video is not currently in release.

The message of this film so magically portrays the essence of the man in a conversational, narrated and acted drama which unfolds the very intricate and precise methodology of this great visionary’s ideas and attitudes on life.

This stunning creation is a movie within a movie, within a movie within a movie… Surely a reality check and a provocative stimulant for fully absorbing the cosmic consciousness of the universe.

You see Dali creating and moving throughout the film, shot at his own home in the Mediterranean. Dali creates on film like no other and the editing is so masterful and intentional with its flashing effects and enlightening juxtaposing messages. Don’t miss this video, write the folks who can get this re-released, share this message with friends. A true cult film like no other and it still is a rarity even in cyberspace!

Even my friend Charles who has seen Perfomance as many times as me (upwards of 50 times!), who can site lines that have been cut since its original realease, would have to agree that this film on Dali is the fullest expression of the greatest expressionaist and communicator of the 20th century. Dali leaves his mark not only in history but in the fabric of time itself, a legacy for the ages!

Un Chien Andalou / Land Without Bread Customer Review: Somewhat interesting, if dated - and polemical
This tape includes two very different pieces from Bu?uel (directed at not too distant time from each other, the late 1920s and the early 1930s). The first is Un Chien Andalou, which is credited as being codirected by Salvador Dali. This surreal short must have been terribly shocking when it was made, but I think that more than 75 years later, a lot of its impact has softened, perhaps because its surreal tricks have appeared in a lot of later movies.
The second piece is flawed too, though at least is more interesting - and I think more polemical, also. It’s a 30 minute documentary about life in one of Spain’s poorest regions. What I find wrong about this movie is that while Bu?uel gleefully shows us the poverty and ignorance of the people living there, he doesn’t have much clues (and doesn’t seem to care much) of how to solve this. Now, 70 years later, Spain is much richer than it was then. And if poverty receded in Spain it was not exactly with the sort of leftism that Bu?uel favored, but with Western European style capitalism. Shockingly, in one scene, the narrator chides that in school, children are taught the value of Pi. Teaching math to poor people, the horror!. Bu?uel shortsightedness is at its most glaring here, not realizing that it is access to the latest knowledge and technology what will help the poor overcome their situation.
All in all, two pieces that have not aged well.
Customer Review: Las Hurdes is absolutely shocking
I just watched Land Without Bread, or Las Hurdes, the only documentary directed by Luis Bunuel. The film is short, only 27 minutes, but it is long enough to portray enough human suffering to disgust. Images include a girl who lies in a road for two days and then dies. No one helps. The local schoolteacher instructs rows upon rows of malnourished children to respect the property of others. The schoolteacher feeds them bread, and makes them eat it immediately to keep their starving parents from taking it from them. They dip it into the only nearby source of water, a trickle running through a ditch where the pigs wallow. Bunuel illustrates with these sorts of images how these people are unbelievably pathetic, yet he clearly goes beyond this when he shows images of the developmentally challenged somehow teetering on the edge of life in a world where even the fittest can rarely overcome. “Morons and dwarves are plentiful…” says the narrator, but in some degree or other, all the people of the community are tragically moronic at every turn. They drink water from the ditch, yet somewhere within a reasonable distance is a river. They try to plant a crop, but the crop is washed away because they plant too near that river. They cook over an open fire indoors, but they don’t make windows for themselves to let smoke out of their homes. They have no food for two months of the year, and yet mothers carry babies around in almost every shot. The viewer is left with the distinct impression that these people can’t survive much longer, and there is certainly no optimism in sight when the film ends. How in the world can these people not plan a little better? The answer, I think, must lie in the intellectually suffocating nature of their hopelessness, the horrendous condition they feel swept away again and again along with every one of even the slightest currents of misfortune. Perhaps they’ve simply quit trying, it would seem.
